VEGETAL EMPATHY: A Multisensory Exploration of Plant Intelligence

We're thrilled to announce that *Vegetal Empathy*, a groundbreaking installation and performance by sound artist Pheobe riley Law, will be presented at Green Lens Studios from March 19-22, 2026.

This immersive work explores our entanglement with more-than-human entities through data, micro-listening, and acts of radical care. The piece re-contextualizes microscopic realities of soil systems, plants, moss species, and plant data, transforming the garden into a collaborative choir of human and non-human performers.

*Vegetal Empathy* unfolds as both a durational installation with live elements and a standalone concert performance. The piece includes filmed projections of plants frozen in water, movement of aquatic-insects, and the artists hand, flexible and transforming - symbolic of our extraction of materials from the land and manipulation of plant DNA. The sound includes voice elements and live automation mimicry, textural rhythmical material and live-soil listening.  Activated hydration of plants, amplified via hydrophones and microphones for listening to the actual sounds of plant and root systems (rather than the sonification of them). Through humans & non-human machine performers the garden space transforms into a collaborative choir.

The exhibition opening might will take place on March 19th at 7pm with refreshments and a special a live performance from the artist.

The installation will be open to the public from March 20-22, 12 noon to 5pm, with free admission.

This is a rare opportunity to engage with plant intelligence and explore new forms of care through sound and sensory experience. Join us as we explore the hidden worlds of the garden and our interconnectedness with the more-than-human world.
